Stage 11: Wednesday 6th September, Lerma – La Laguna Negra, 163. 5km With a flat run to the final climb of La Laguna Negra, it’ll be a breakaway win, though with gradients up to 14% there may be GC splits. Stage 12: Thursday 7th September, Ólvega – Zaragoza, 151km A sprint is most likely on Stage 12 but the race director’s notes warn of potential crosswinds. Stage 13: Friday 8th September, Formigal – Col du Tourmalet, 135km Utterly brutal.
The Vuelta is always stacked with steep climbs and 2023 is no different, with the first mountain stage coming in hot on Stage 3 and the headline acts mirroring the 2020 route with a trip to France for the Col du Tourmalet‘s third big race appearance in two months and the return of the fearsome Altu de l’Angliru. It’s not all climbing though, there are plenty of chances for the sprinters should they survive the mountains, and two time-trials in a team time-trial to get things underway on Stage 1 and a flat individual time-trial after the first rest day that will see TT specialists like Filippo Ganna and Stefan Bissegger facing off against Olympic champion Roglič, multi-time World Champs podium finisher and winner of last year’s only ITT Evenepoel, and the man who many said did the greatest time-trial performance in history just last month Vingegaard.
5km Stage 3 sees the race head into Andorra, and to get into Andorra you need to go up. Two tough first category climbs will produce the first GC splits of this year’s Vuelta. Stage 4: Tuesday 29th August, Andorra la Vella – Tarragona, 183. 5km This should be the first chance for the sprinters and with an intermediate sprint just 20km from the line, it’s a double dip. Stage 5: Wednesday 30th August, Morella – Burriana, 186. 5km The organisers have generously given the sprinters a second category climb to contend with before another double sprint on the run-in. Stage 6: Thursday 31st August, La Vall d’Uixó – Pico del Buitre, 183.
