[STREAM!] Today: Giants vs Athletics live watch 5 August 2023
There was no live crowd to witness the Giants’ on-field protest and Alyssa Nakken’s historic appearance as a first base coach. The oddness got into Manaea’s head a bit, too. “It was weird warming up, but once I got things going, it was pretty normal, ” Manaea said. As the game wore on, the A’s board operations crew amped up the symphony of drums, horns and whistles with some ambient “Let’s go Oakland” chants piped over, too. There were some inexplicable airplane sounds, and it was unclear whether the BART horns were from real passing trains or part of the track.
The game’s the same, albeit with a little rust. The live viewing experience? It felt like an out-of-body experience. The cacophony of ill-timed, piped-in crowd noise. The motionless, smiling cardboard faces of season ticket holders, Simpsons characters, dogs, cats, old Hollywood stars and old A’s stars, too — not to mention a few giant stuffed bears. The outdoor press box, the in-game Zoom meetings with players. The temperature checks and symptom surveys upon entry.

A’s vs. Giants: Here’s what it feels like to watch a live baseball game in an empty stadiumOnly 200-some people were inside the Oakland Coliseum to watch the A’s take on the San Francisco Giants in an exhibition game Monday night. Well, there were 5, 100 people if you count the sea of cardboard cutouts occupying the green seats A’s fans once filled. Yes, after a four-month hiatus, countless rounds of league vs. player negotiations, nerve-wracking testing delays and three short weeks of spring training 2. 0, a major league-level baseball game was played in the Bay Area for the first time since last October.
Every reporter, masked up from the auxiliary press box, is squished into a virtual box, waiting to talk from their personal laptops. Then, first pitch. Media moved from the sprawling press boxes that overlook Mt. Davis to a cluster of tables down the third-base line overlooking the white backsides of those cardboard cutouts. Behind us in the is a row of locked-up concession stands. A’s staff and security guards are the only ones roaming the Coliseum’s cavernous hallways.

Eerie. PA announcer Dick Callahan’s voice isn’t booming over the speakers to the tune of the full, musically timed introductions. A’s executive producer of ballpark entertainment Amelia Schimmel took over the mic this season. A lone security guard on the third-base side is the only one clapping along. “A little weird still coming out and not seeing fans and not hearing them when you come out of the tunnel, ” A’s manager Bob Melvin said.
The strangeness of it all is exacerbated by the fact that I’ve been watching baseball the same way my entire life. And, maybe, that I took my typical baseball writer’s daily routine for granted in a pre-pandemic world. Gone are the days of walking right into a clubhouse and striking up conversation with a player or coach for a story. There’s no time or space for one-on-one conversations, let alone any face-to-face conversations. Forget about crowded, personal bubble-popping postgame scrums. Health protocols can’t allow it. Most conversations between reporters and players or the coaching staff happen just like any other workplace meeting these days: over Zoom.
The Coliseum has hosted its fair share of sparse, quiet crowds, but nothing compares to the silence that fell over the ballpark when every player settled into position 6:40 p. m. I could practically hear Sean Manaea’s cleat dig into the mound dirt as he went into his windup. The sound of his first-pitch fastball smacking into catcher Sean Murphy’s glove was the loudest sound coming from the field for those long 20 seconds.
